Frequently Asked Questions

We collaborate with prison support staff and partner organisations to find families who qualify to receive a laptop. If you are a prisoner enrolled in a learning program, or if you are a family member of a prisoner, then please contact us at hello@rebooted.me. We will evaluate whether your family meets the requirements to receive a laptop when they become available.

No, there are no charges for either a young person with a parent in prison or a prison leaver to receive a Rebooted laptop. We believe that digital poverty should never prevent children from being able to access education or prevent families from maintaining a relationship through communication. All of our operating expenses are paid for by donor funds, corporate partnerships, and grants.

In the UK, over 2 million laptops are discarded annually. We partner with corporations to rescue fully functional devices that are being upgraded. By installing a new operating system, we extend their usable life by up to six additional years.

Maintaining data security is our number one concern. To ensure that data is deleted from every donated device, we partner with Getech, who perform the following steps:

  • Data is removed from donated devices using industry-standard methods.
  • Hard drives are completely erased and certified to AIDISA standards.
  • Each device receives a fresh install of Chrome OS to remove any prior data.
  • We issue a certificate of compliance to donors regarding data removal.
  • Our processes comply with GDPR and data protection regulations.

Your company's data is completely secure throughout the entire donation and refurbishment process.

Yes. We use Chrome OS as it is a secure cloud-based operating system developed by Google. We utilise Chrome OS Flex because it:

  • Is a very efficient way of running older hardware.
  • Is proven to be more energy efficient than leading operating systems.
  • Provides free security updates automatically.
  • Supplies a safe method of internet access.
  • Contains educational software pre-installed.
  • Does not require technical knowledge to administer.
  • Has low maintenance requirements.
  • Stops malware and viruses.

We provide ongoing technical support for all distributed devices. Families can contact our support team for:

  • Troubleshooting guidance
  • Software issues
  • Basic repairs where possible
  • Replacement devices in cases of hardware failure

Our goal is to ensure every family has reliable, working technology for as long as they need it.
